Called-Up But Un-Capped

This is a list of players who have been called-up by Northern Ireland, without ever being awarded a senior cap.

This includes unused substitutes, reserves in attendance, named squad players withdrawn through injury or circumstance, and stand-by players (though it is seldom revealed who is actually on stand-by).

This list is likely very incomplete, and any additions are welcome.

More recent players listed could still earn caps and will be removed.

In an interview in the Ballymena Guardian it was claimed that former Linfield and Ballymena United defender John Garrett was called up into the squad for a WCQ against Holland in the mid-seventies. You may want to look into this.

I'm not convinced by this at all. Garrett would have bee 17/18 years-old at the time of the World Cup Qualifiers against the Netherlands in 1976 and 1977.

John Garrett did win School and Youth caps and in the late-1970s travelled with a Linfield youth side (presumably the Rangers) to Holland for the Haarlem Youth Tournament - A possible cause for confusion.

Just checked here where it is mentioned. I still can't find it referenced in any contemporary sources, but if anybody has anything please let me know!

I can see from the called up/uncapped list that it must be very frustrating being a nation's second or third best goalkeeper. :)

I think there are some others missing from this list as well. Those players who got late call ups due to injury but were never even in the programme, newspaper or had any chance ofr playing. The Spain friendly in 2002 might offer some clues and I seem to remember Italy away with Gary Hamilton and Glenn Ferguson being 2 of 3 NI players from the Irish League. What about Joey Cunningham, Danny Lennon, Neil Masters and Gary McCartney? Were they not at least in training and squad prep under Billy Bingham?
