Biography:
A member of the Northern Ireland squad that claimed the 1972 British Amateur Championship.

In 1978 he scored the winning penalty for Drogheda United in a Tyler Cup tie against ex-club, Cliftonville. He was one of a healthy Belfast-based contingent then with the Drogs, which also included Martin Donnelly, Brendan Tully and Gerry Brammeld.

McAuley was from a footballing family. His father, Bobby Senior, was part of the Dundela team that won the Irish Cup in 1955 and also played for Belfast Celtic, Crusaders and Bray Wanderers. His brother Jim played for Newry Town and Donegal Celtic while another brother, Terry, played for Distillery.

BOBBY McAULEY, who died last week in Belfast aged 88, was man of the match and captain when Dundela shocked Glenavon 3-0 in 1955 to become the only non-League club to win the IFA Cup. It was McAuley's eclipse of Northern Ireland star Wilbur Cush which was the deciding factor that day.

Bobby, who also played for Belfast Celtic and Crusaders, spent a season with Bray Wanderers, and his three sons, Jim, Bobby Jr and Terry all followed him into football. Jim played for Newry Town and Donegal Celtic, Bobby for Portadown and Drogheda, and Terry for Distillery.

Terry, who is President of the Irish Universities Union, is heavily involved with Dublin University, but his son, Robert, was a stalwart for ten years with UCD, and played for Dundalk last season.

The late Bobby certainly started a football dynasty. May he rest in peace.
