A Brief History
There are records of a football match being played at Ulsterville on 3rd March 1877 when members of the Windsor (Rugby) Football Club played a trial match among its members. This was for a mooted exhibition against match against Caledonians in Glasgow which never came to fruition.
Linfield sought a new ground due to a lack of space and room for expansion at their ground, the Meadow.
In 1889 Linfield secured a 10 year lease for land on Ulsterville Avenue. The site, described as "nothing more than a sandhole" was quickly converted to an excellent pitch by voluntary labour. After just four years Linfield, who had invested heavily in the ground, found themselves in rent arrears and were evicted in January 1895. They found themselves homeless, playing all matches on their opponents grounds, but despite attempts to return to the site (whilst also considering new sites on the Stranmillis and Ravenhill Roads) they played all their fixtures "away" until setting up their new home at Myrtlefield, Balmoral in 1896.
