A Brief History:
The Athletic Ground (aka Ynys Stadium) was the
first home of Aberdare Town. The team would become Aberdare Athletic, reach
three Welsh Cup finals and be members of the Football League from 1921/22-1926/27.
The highpoints for the stadium came in 1908.
On New Years Day it hosted Wales and New Zealand’s rugby league teams, the
first ever rugby league international fixture between nations (previously
England had played against “the Others”). In April it hosted it’s only football
international, the visitors Ireland defeating the hosts 1-0.
Aberdare left the Football League in 1927
and folded shortly thereafter and football left the Athletic Ground. It
continued to host greyhound meetings through to the 1950s. The site is
currently a sports complex.
