The Testimonial has been a traditional a reward for the loyalty of a player to a particular club, usually after 10 years of service. and set them up for their lives after football. Similarly, benefit matches were awarded to players who had their careers cut short by injury, or in even more tragic situations, to raise money for their families should their lives have been cut short. More recently these events have often been used to raise money for good causes as player's career earnings make their retirements potentially more comfortable.
Although many testimonial matches are treated as fairly normal friendly matches, others have brought together interesting "selects", old XIs or simply seen guests pull on the jersey of one of their rivals for a single celebratory match.
