Northern Ireland Players in the Welsh Cup

Founded for the 1877/78 season, the Welsh Cup is the third oldest national knock-out competition in world football, with the trophy the second oldest in continuous use (after the Scottish Cup).

From its earliest days, the competition was supplemented by teams from across the English border (+), and was dominated by the Welsh clubs playing within the English league pyramid until they were barred in 1995 following a UEFA diktat.

Northern Ireland Players in the FAW Premier Cup

With some of the prestige of the the Welsh Cup lost following the removal of the clubs playing in the English leagues, the FAW launched the Invitation Cup in 1997/98. The competition, renamed as the Premier Cup for the second edition, pitted the leading clubs from the League of Wales (Welsh Premier League after 2002/03) against the “exiled” clubs. The competition folded in 2008 after losing sponsorship. There have since been unsuccessful attempts to bring the exiled clubs back into an FAW run competition.
