In August 2020 it was reported that Sykes had declared his intentions to declare for the Republic of Ireland. This was just days before he was due to be included in Ian Barraclough's first senior squad and after he had already featured on the bench under Michael O'Neill. In 2022 Sykes' switch to the Republic was confirmed and he was first called into Stephen Kenny's squad.
