An attacking midfield player, Gavin Whyte established himself in the Crusaders side as they won back-to-back league title in 2015 and 2016. He became a regular in Jim Magilton's Northern Ireland Under-21 side throughout the 2017 European Championship qualifying campaign. He incurred the wrath of the Irish FA when he unexpectedly withdrew from the squad that was to face France in October 2016 and subsequently served a suspension from domestic football.

After anoher successful season with Crusaders, Whyte was promoted to the senior Northern Ireland squad for the 2018 Central American tour.
