A member of the Northern Ireland Amateur team that claimed the 1964 Home Nations title, Malachy O'Neill was a multi-honoured inside-forward. He represented the Irish Boys' Clubs against England in 1960, played against Scotland in a Youth international the following year and received a trial for the British Olympic squad following his amateur international appearances through 1963.
