Biography:
James Knowles has represented Northern Ireland throughout the Schools and Youth team set-ups. He was particularly impressive during the 2011 Milk Cup and earned elevation to the Under-21 squad for a European qualifier against the Faroe Islands at the Oval that August. Playing in an unfamiliar right-back role his running proved to be potent offensively but he saw himself red carded for a clumsy challenge late on in a 4-0 win.
Knowles was released by Blackburn at the end of the 2011/12 season. After several trials he joined Cliftonville in late-September and played an important role in their Premiership title win. He missed out on further honours as injury ruled him out of the Irn Bru League Cup final win over Crusaders and the expiration of his contract prior to the Irish Cup final saw him denied a place for the defeat by Glentoran.
As a free agent, Knowles signed for Linfield for the 2013/14 season. His first goal for the Blues was a free kick against Cliftonville. He struggled to maintain a firstteam place and in January he agreed a loan move with Ards. He was unable to help Ards survive in the top-flight and re-signed for Cliftonville in May 2014.
