Capped as a Junior in March 1948 while playing for Linfield Swifts and as an Amateur while briefly with Arsenal, Joe Dubois' first taste of senior football came with Peter Doherty's Doncaster Rovers. He played eleven times in Rovers' 1949/50 Division Three (North) title winning side but soon fell from the firstteam reckoning. He dropped into non-league football with Bedford and by the time he signed for Grimsby in 1953 was working at Finningley Aerodrome. Despite making a scoring debut for the Mariners in a 2-0 home win over Accrington, Dubois soon dropped to the reserves. He finally enjoyed regular League football with Halifax through to February 1957 when he left the club by mutual consent.

I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Joe Dubois in 1985, in the company of another ex-Rover Clarrie Jordan, in Clarrie's pub the Schoolboy, at Norton, just outside Doncaster. I well recall Joe's charisma, keen sense of humor, red hair, and tales of Peter Doherty's Doncaster Rovers. Sad to see he passed only a couple of years after I met him.
