Biography:
Although perennial strugglers for much of their history, the all-amateur Cliftonville did regularly field some gifted players - two that formed an effective partnership were Norman McCaw and James McClelland who starred together on the left hand side of the forward line during the 1931/32 season. The pair formed a delightful partnership and on a single occasion they carried that form onto the international field as Ireland Amateurs tore their Scottish counterparts apart, McClelland claiming two goals and McCaw one in a 4-0 victory on their home turf of Solitude. McClelland actually graduated from junior football as a full-back, developing into a half-back with Cliftonville Olympic and it was in that role he initially played his senior football. It was after a season and a half as a back that he finally took to the forward line where he was "an enthusiastic and tireless worker" and possessor of a "splendid shooting boot". McClelland took his talents to Ballymena for the 1932/33 campaign.
