Biography:
A player with Glentoran during their first season, Modesto Silo was of Italian descent and his younger brother George Louis would later captain the Glens to their first ever Irish League Championship success in 1893/94. Modesto was born in Galway to George Louis Silo and Lizzy Liddle, the Silo family were publicans and picture framers as well as Italian translators.

Modesto took the field for Glentoran's first match against Mountavon on 7 October 1882 and was described as among the club's "stoutest players" and was captain during some of their difficult early seasons. In 1886 Silo was part of the Glens side that appeared in their first ever major final - a 1-5 defeat by Cliftonville at Ballynafeigh in the Charity Cup.

On 1 October 1887 Silo captained Glentoran in their first ever match against Linfield (then called Linfield Athletics) - the friendly game finished in a 3-1 defeat. A week after that historic match Silo was turning out for Distillery in an English FA Cup match against Blackburn Park Road. Although Park Road won 2-1, they were disqualified following a protest and Distillery progressed. Silo was not included for Distillery's next match which was lost 4-2 to Witton.

Shortly thereafter Silo joined the YMCA club, then among the strongest in Belfast. At the end of that season he appeared for Ireland against England at Ballynafeigh, the Irish backs doing well to restrict the English to a 1-5 scoreline. The following season he was back in the "English" Cup, as YMCA lost 5-0 to Belfast neighbours, Cliftonville.
