A regular as inside-left for Ireland and Cliftonville in the late-1890s, James McCashin earned a recall to the international team for the Ibrox Disaster Fund match of 1902 due to the unavailability of Ireland’s England-based players.
The highlight of McCashin’s domestic career was Cliftonville’s 1897 Irish Cup Final win, 3-1 over Sherwood Foresters.
McCashin went on to have a distinguished military career. In January 1902 he joined the North of Ireland Regiment of Imperial Yeomanry for service in South Africa during the Boer War. In 1917 he won the Military Cross during his service in the First World War.
