Biography:
Peter Thompson developed a fearsome goalscoring reputation while with Linfield. He made his Blues debut at Glenavon in April 2002 but it was to be two seasons before he established himself as a Windsor Park first-teamer. The Irish League's top goalscorer in 2006 and 2008, he collected three titles and three Irish Cups, scoring 152 goalsin just 202 starts and 33 appearances from the bench.
..
Thompson collected four Under-21 caps during his time with Linfield before making his Full international debut in the IFA 125th Anniversary match against Portugal in November 2005, coming on as a 77th minute substitute for James Quinn. The previous month he had to turn down an invite to train with the squad due to work commitments as a postman. Further representative honours came his way as he played for the Irish League against the English Conference in February 2007 and for the Northern Ireland Under-23 side in the International Trophy, scoring against Belgium. In March 2008 Thompson scored his first senior international goal, bundling home from close range late-on in a 4-1 win over Georgia.
..
Having been long-linked with a move across the Irish Sea, possible destinations included Aberdeen, Fulham, QPR, Norwich City and Gretna, Thompson signed for Stockport County in July 2008 in a deal worth £100,000 plus add-ons. Having worn the number 17 shirt for Linfield, he was awarded the squad number nine on his arrival at Edgeley Park. Thompson scored his first Football League goal against Cheltenham on 27 September 2008 in a 2-2 draw. His first season in England was disrupted when he suffered a punctured lung during training in January 2009.
..
Thompson returned to Linfield on loan for the second half of the 2009/10 season, proving a catalyst for The Blues run to "The Double". He scored his fifth Irish Cup final goal in the 2-1 win over Portadown. In July 2010 he agreed to return to Linfield permanently on a three year deal and his goals aided the team to another "Double".
In August 2011 Thompson was recalled to the Northern Ireland squad after a near two year absence due to injuries to Josh McQuoid and Martin Paterson. Shortly after that he was forced out of football for three months as he required kidney surgery, but on his return to fitness he resumed his scoring ways and added yet another "Double" to his collection. That season he also reached the 200 goal milestone for the club with an Irish Cup brace against Ballyclare Comrades.
Injuries and ill-health finally slowed Thompson's goalscoring form as he managed just 16 goals in his last three seasons at Windsor Park. By the time of his release in the summer of 2015 he had managed 230 goals in 417 games, including 15 hattricks. Remarkably, he never finished as a loser in an Irish Cup tie for the club and his tally of 26 European appearances are bettered only by Noel Bailie.
