On Tuesday 29 May 2007 Alan McDonald was appointed manager of Glentoran. His coaching experience included a period as Jimmy Quinn's assistant at Swindon and since 2000 as coach of the Northern Ireland Under-21 squad under Roy Millar. He joined Glentoran as assistant-manager to Paul Millar in 2006 and he was confirmed as manager following on from the "Roy Walker debacle". In 2009 McDonald led the Glens to their first title since 2009, but following a period of indifferent form he left the following March.

Alan McDonald collapsed and died while playing golf in June 2012. He was just 48 years-old and his sudden death was met with shock throughout local football and beyond. As a tribute a Northern Ireland XI faced a QPR XI at Seaview. In May 2013 he was inducted into the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Association Hall of Fame.
