Biography:
A multi-honoured goalkeeper, Tom Scott won his first Ireland cap as a 21 year-old but everntually retired from football at the premature age of 29.

Scott gained his first footballing experience while attending the Mercantile Academy (now Belfast High School) before joining Cliftonville Olympic in 1892 at the age of 19. He was promoted to the Cliftonville firstteam for the 1893/94 season and by the end of that campaign had twice been selected for Ireland. Over the next six years Scott was a virtual ever-present on the international stage, taking his cap total to thirteen.

In 1897 Scott, who also played four times in representative fixture for the Irish League, won his only Irish Cup medal following a 3-1 defeat of Sherwood Foresters at Distillery's Grosvenor Park ground. His time at Solitude also brought successes in the Co. Antrim Shield and Charities Cup prior to a move to Partick Thistle in 1898. The third goalkeeper utilised by Partick during the 1898/99 season, he lasted just a month in Scotland, leaving following a dispute with the management over money.

On his return to Belfast Scott resumed his career with Cliftonville and regained his place in the Ireland team. He remained on the books at Solitude until retiring at the end of the 1902/03 season, but by then he had been largely sidelined by the presence of another Ireland international 'keeper, Sam McAlpine.

A sickly man, even in his playing days, Tom Scott succumbed to Tuberculosis at his father's home in Clifton Park, Belfast in 1908. Just 34 when he died, Cliftonville erected a prominent memorial to Scott in the Carnmoney Parish Church gave yard in which he was laid to rest.
