Biography:
A "sparkling" left-winger with Glenavon, James Burns played in consecutive Irish Cup Final defeats for the Lurgan Blues, but did manage to claim a City Cup winner's medal. His form earned him a call-up for Ireland's match against England at West Brom in 1922 and a move across the water in 1924.

Considered a "good capture" for Reading, Burns went straight into the firstteam at outside-right but lost his place after four games. He never recovered his place and eventually returned to Ireland.
