- This match was called off in the wake of a terrorist bomb in Omagh which killed 29 people, including a woman who was pregnant with twins on Saturday 15th August 1998. Northern Ireland played the Republic of Ireland in a fund-raiser for the victims the following May.
- An Under-21 match which was due to be held was also cancelled (ticket below).
- The Malta squads were already enroute to Belfast when the decision was made to cancel the matches. In lieu of the internationals the Maltese FA organised a training camp and two behind-closed-doors friendly matches:
- Cliftonville FC 0-3 Malta XI
- R.U.C. FC 3-1 Malta U21 XI
