Notes:
- Northern Ireland's defence was weakened by the absence through injury of Chris Baird, Tony Capaldi, Mark Clyde and Gareth McAuley.
- George McCartney withdrew from squad and declared that he would not play for Northern Ireland again while Lawrie Sanchez was manager.
- There was a minutes silence before kick-off for former Malta goalkeeper David Cluett who had died on 17th July at the age of 39. The Malta players wore black armbands as a mark of respect
- Keith Gillespie sent-off for a second time in a Northern Ireland shirt. He had kicked the ball in frustration at Andrew Cohen who he had felt dived. Ivan Woods was sent off for pushing Gillespie in the same incident.
- Maik Taylor saved a stoppage-time penalty.
