Biography:

In the search for a successor to Lawrie Sanchez, the Irish FA picked one of the few Ulster-men with Premiership management experience. After taking over mid-way through the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, Nigel Worthington had a rocky start to his tenure and Northern Ireland fell just short of making the trip to Austria and Switzerland despite some impressive results.

The IFA offered Worthington a two-year extension to his initial short-term deal and he was given wider responsibility including in youth development.

Worthington is assisted by former Wales international Glynn Snodin (now coach at Leeds and previously at West Ham, Southampton and Charlton) and Bolton goalkeeping coach Fred Barber.

In October 2011 Worthington announced that he would not be seeking a new contract after the Euro 2012 qualifiers following a string of poor results and criticism from fans.
