Biography:
The story of Malcolm Butler's signing for Blackpool in 1935 was a tale to match a James Bond movie. Wanted by both Belfast Celtic and the Seasiders, the player was holed-up in a Bangor pub, where officials from both clubs arrived to find Butler had been locked in an upstairs bedroom by the landlord. The Blackpool officials crept up the stairs, completed the necessary forms, and escaped by way of the bedroom window, taking Butler with them. Not until a couple of hours later did the Belfast Celtic officials - their face red with impatience - learn what had happened.
At Blackpool Butler developed into a highly accomplished and versatile footballer, slotting into the team at half-back and forward as well as his recognised full-back position. From full-back he was noted as "a clever defender with a gift for converting danger into a counter-attack". He was selected for the only time for Ireland's match with Wales at Wrexham in 1939, but played in war-time matches, notably in a 4-2 win over the British Army.
During the war Butler served with the RAF, and at one point was listed MIA during air operations in the Middle East. Thankfully he turned up safe and well and returned to Blackpool after hostilities had ended. By the time League football resumed for the 1946/47 Butler had dropped out of the first-team reckoning, and moved on to Accrington Stanley where he made 32 appearances in the 1947/48 season.

Biography:
Being a Ballymena Academy old-boy, Hugh Barr’s schooldays were spent mainly playing Rugby, his only chance to play football coming with his Boys’ Brigade team. Although he enjoyed rugby, playing for the school and later returning to the sport when his top-level footballing career had ended, Barr’s one real regret in football was not winning a Schoolboy cap, which would have completed the “set”.
After leaving school, Barr’s footballing career started to develop with pace, taking him from Junior side Harryville Amateurs, to ‘B’ Division Ballyclare Comrades, and finally to the Irish League with Cliftonville. At Solitude Barr won his first representative honours, picking up Youth and Amateur International caps.
Whilst attending Loughborough College, Barr was selected for the British Universities team, scoring the only goal of the match against Irish Universities in Dublin. He drew the attentions of Everton, signing Amateur forms in the mid-1950s, but after returning to Northern Ireland to teach at Ballymena Boys Intermediate the travelling became difficult and he signed for Coleraine.
At Coleraine Barr won a Gold Cup winner’s medal and was selected for the Irish League for the first time, scoring on his debut against the League of Ireland in March 1957. A move to hometown club Ballymena brought further honours, including a 3-1 Ulster Cup Final win over Glenavon, a match in which he scored from thirty yards out with his left foot – that was one of over 40 goals he scored during the 1960/61 season. In 1960 Barr was selected for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Football squad for the Rome Olympics, although he didn’t make the pitch during the Finals tournament.
At the end of the July 1961, Barr signed for Linfield, and although he spent just one season at Windsor Park, he was an integral part of the side that completed a clean-sweep of seven trophies. Indeed, Barr’s return of 46 goals in 50 games made him top goalscorer, and even his missed penalty in the League play-off with Portadown could not take away from his starring role in a 3-1 victory.
The 1961/62 season also brought Barr his first full international cap, as the Irish put in an excellent performance to draw 1-1 with England at Wembley in November 1961. The following season two further caps came Barr’s way, in a 2-0 win over Poland and in a 3-1 defeat by England at Windsor Park, Barr scoring the consolation.
At the end of the 1961/62 season, with his pockets heavy with medals, Barr, then 27 years-old, signed for Coventry City, a club then building for a push which would eventually take them from Third Division to First Division under the stewardship of Jimmy Hill. The 1962/63 season began with Coventry donning a new all sky-blue kit for the first time, with Hugh Barr leading the line. A return of twelve League goals in his first season was not enough to help Coventry out of Division Three, but Barr did score twice in an FA Cup run that took the club to the quarter-finals, where they lost out 3-1 to eventual winners, Manchester United.
When the Third Division title was claimed the following season, Barr played only a small part, scoring three goals in thirteen appearances. Never the most elegant of players, he had always been more of a “battering-ram” leading the line, and when he began to lose his pace, he lost his place in the first eleven.
After leaving Highfield Road, Hugh Barr returned to teaching, and played non-League football with Cambridge United. After that brief return to rugby as outside-half with Shelford, Barr took the role of player-manager with Ely City before finally hanging up his boots at the age of 37.

Biography:
Harry Baird won an Irish Cup winners' medal with Linfield in April 1936, and five months later scored on his debut for the Irish League, against the Scottish League at Ibrox. He won a second representative honour when he assisted the Irish League to a famous 3-2 victory against the Football League at Windsor Park in September 1936.
Manchester United had been chasing Baird for some months before their £3,500 offer was accepted in January 1937. He joined a struggling side and was slow to settle, making his League debut on January 23rd, he could do little as United finished in 21st place and were relegated. In the following season the skilful Irishman found his form, scoring 12 League goals, and three in four FA Cup ties, as United secured promotion as runners-up to Aston Villa.
In September 1938 he was transferred to Huddersfield Town, and whilst at Leeds Road won his only international cap, against England. The game was played at Old Trafford, but it proved to be anything but a happy return for Harry Baird as England won 7-0, Willie Hall of Spurs scoring five goals. Baird was also part of the Huddersfield side who, although struggling against relegation from the First Division, made it to the 1939 FA Cup Semi-Final.
During World War Two, Baird guested for a number of clubs while serving in the RAF, and on the resumption of the League programme he signed for Division Three (South) side Ipswich Town, making his debut away to Leyton Orient on 31st August 1946. Baird appeared in 234 League and FA Cup matches for Ipswich, scoring seven goals, mainly from wing-half.
Baird retired from playing during the 1951/52 season, making his final appearance at Crystal Palace on 20th October 1951, and remained at Portman Road as a coach until June 1953.

Jim "Bummer" Allen
One of the multi-talented stars of the era of amateur sportmen, "Bummer" Allen helped put Limavady on the footballing map, only for the club to be lost to Junior football following the foundation of the Irish League.Name: James Allen
Born: Limavady
Position: Back
Representative Honours: Ireland: 1 Full Cap (1887).
Club Honours: (with Limavady) Irish Cup Runner-Up: 1894/95, 1895/96.
Club Career:
Limavady
Biography:
A member of the successful Limavady Cricket Club, who claimed the Northwest Senior Cricket Cup in 1888, Jim "Bummer" Allen played in two Irish Cup finals, losing out both times to Distillery, in 1885 and 1886. Success on the football front did arrive however as Limavady Football Club dominated the Northwest Cup throughout the 1880s.
Aside from his single cap, in a 7-0 defeat by England in 1887, the highlight of Allen's footballing career must have been Limavady's 1886 trip to England, where they defeated Everton 1-0 - the only Irish side ever to do so.

Billy Anderson
A star of Linfield's successful side of the late 1890s and early 1900s, William Anderson picked up Irish League and Irish Cup titles as well as four Irish caps...Name: William John Stewart Anderson
Born: 14 February 1877
Died: 28 April 1938
Position: Half-Back
Representative Honours: Ireland: 4 Full caps (1898-99)
Club Honours: (with Linfield) Irish Cup Winner 1897/98; (with Cliftonville) Irish Cup Winner 1900/01.
Club Career:
Linfield (Irish League); Cliftonville (Irish League).
Biography:
Winner of four caps for Ireland, all in the right-half position. Played all the games in the 1897/98 Home Nations Championship, and won his final cap the following year against Scotland after moving from Linfield to Cliftonville.
Malcolm Brodie's book "Linfield - 100 Years" (1985), states that Billy Anderson made his Linfield debut in a 7-1 Irish League defeat by 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment. I can find no record of this game. An 'R. Anderson' also played for Linfield around this time.
If you have any further information on Billy Anderson, please leave a comment. Thanks!

To conclude our series on Northern Ireland players in the Premiership, NIFG presents a series of tables graphs to present the pattern of players by season and to illustrate those teams where our talent thrives.
Appearances by Season
The table below shows the number of players who made Premiership first-team appearances in each of the competitions fourteen seasons, the number of players who made their Premiership debut, the total appearances, games started, appearances from the bench, and finally, goals scored.

The graph shows how Northern Ireland player's impact has declined with the influx of foreign talent to the Premiership, and illustrates our problems in the ongoing search for regular goalscorers.
Appearances by Club
The table below illustrates the clubs who have featured Northern Ireland players in the Premiership. Generally it is the small-to-middling clubs who feature highly in this table, and whilst a big club like Manchester United has brought through a number of youngsters, few have made a significant impact on their first-team.

While the Lawrie Sanchez/Fulham/Northern Ireland "Ulster-on-Thames" tie-up for the 2007/08 was largely unsuccessful, the club's survival grants at least some of the NI4 another chance in the Premier League. Maik Taylor and Damien Johnson however dropped back to the Championship after a single season return. Question marks remain over where Jonny Evans will be playing in 2008/09 - Manchester United or Sunderland. Chris Brunt should get his first chance in top-flight football with West Brom, where he could be joined by another Northern Ireland winger, Pat McCourt.
