Founded by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and first played in the 1883/84 season, it was played annually until discontinued in 1984 as England and Scotland sought more competitive international fixtures. The format of the tournament remained largely unchanged throughout its history, being played on a single match round-robin basis, with two points for a win and one for a draw.
