Biography:
Willie Cowan came to the fore during Cliftonville's participation in the 1955 Isle of Man National Football Tournament, which featured the British Isles' leading amateur sides (Bohemians, Bishop Auckland, Newtown) plus the Isle of Man's national XI and a British European Airways International XI. Cowan earned praise for a series of "clever displays".

It was only after the start of the 1955/56 season that he Cowan established himself in the Irish League. Though small in stature, he was an assured tackler and effective in both defence and attack. It was these qualities that earned him two Amateur caps during that season.
