Biography:
Dessie Cathcart was Linfield's regular outside-left through the late-60s and early-70s and was honoured a number of times at representative level. An entertaining player, dubbed as "the Blues' George Best", it was predicted that his trickery would earn him a move across the Irish Sea early in his career. He was one of two Linfield players to fail from the penalty spot in their 2-0 1968 Irish Cup final defeat by Crusaders.
Cathcart suffered another Irish Cup final reverse in 1973, and it was not until he joined Ards for the following season that he collected an Irish Cup winner's medal. In the same season he was part of Ards' greatest season, as they also picked up the Blaxnit Cup, Gold Cup and Ulster Cup.
"A talented footballer who has the knack of turning a game after seeming to be out of it. A beautiful kicker of a ball."
