Biography:
"No safer pair of hands ever held a ball, and it will be an awkward shot indeed if Lillie does not take it as a matter of course and deal with it after the manner of a master."
Acclaimed for his coolness and anticipation, Lillie broke into the Cliftonville firstteam towards the end of the 1934/35 season and, although still comparatively young, established himself for the following campaign. He was rewarded with two Amateur caps as the season drew to a close.
Early in 1936/37 Lillie arrived at Glentoran who were suffering something of a goalkeeping crisis. Indeed, he was just one of four players who were tried between the sticks by the Glens as they slumped to a disappointing mid-table league position.
