World football's governing body FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is made up of six regional Confederations, each of whom have control of areas which are roughly equivalent to the continents. These are:
AFC (Asian Football Confederation)
CAF (Confédération Africaine de Football)
CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football)
CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol)
OFC (Oceania Football Confederation)
UEFA (Union of European Football Associations)

The table above summarises (Northern) Ireland's record against the membership of each Confederation at the time of the most recent meeting or, if a nation no longer exists, the Confederation to which they were affiliated.

Notes:
  • The earliest international matches were played years prior to the Confederations being founded.
  • Several nations have moved Confederations. e.g. Israel (now UEFA, formerly AFC and OFC) and Australia (now AFC, formerly OFC). Their records have been counted towards UEFA and AFC respectively.
  • As Northern Ireland are members of UEFA, it is inevitable that the majority of their matches are against other UEFA members. For instance, in European Championship and World Cup qualifiers as well as for convenient friendly internationals.
  • Northern Ireland have never played a team that are currently members of OFC. Australia were members when the sides met in 1980 but are now members of AFC. They are considered as OFC members above as they were in 1980.
