Alex Doherty was already knocking on the door of amateur international recognition while still playing for Distillery Seconds. Indeed it was only shortly after he was elevated to the senior ranks, in place of ex-amateur international Denis McCurley, that he was awarded his only cap. 1959/60 was a season of flux for the role of Ireland Amateurs left-back, and three different men were tried in each of that seasons internationals - Doherty, Bangor's George Matier and Eddie Johnston of Ballymena who made his fourth and final appearance in the last match of the campaign.
