Biography:
After a prolific period at centre-forward with Ards during the first-half of the 1928/29 season Alan Davidson an Amateur international cap against England. Selected at inside-right, despite his more usual role as "a vanguard leader", it was not a wholly unfamiliar position for the player to find himself in as he had previously figured in all three of the inside-forward positions.

Davidson, previously with Amateur League side Ophir, gained his first experience in senior football with Barn and then Larne through the 1927/28 season giving "promising displays". He took advantage of an amateur player's freedom to seek a new club (if they so wished) at the end of each season to sign for Ards in the summer of 1928. By the turn of the year he had plundered eleven goals, including League doubles against Queen's Island and Larne and another brace against Glentoran in a Gold Cup semi-final victory.

Despite such rich form and his international recognition, Davidson's prowess was awarded faint praise by the Ireland's Saturday Night: "...more impressive on some days than others, but his control is generally of a high order. He is perhaps slow in getting off his mark, and rather inclined to shoot from unfavourable positions."

The ISN's suggested remedy of "practice" offered an empty solution as Davidson elected to seek a career at sea in December 1928. Without their most potent goalscoring threat Ards played out their season just clear of the Irish League's re-election spots and lost out 3-1 to Linfield in the Gold Cup final. On his departure the ISN lamented: "We are confident that the best had not yet been seen of Davidson, and had he remained ashore that he would have mounted farther up the ladder of football fame".
