Among the founding members of the Irish Football Association in 1880, Avoniel FC featured on the playing field for only a short time, disbanding in December 1883 with many of their players joining Glentoran. They produced only one international footballer for Ireland, though this may have been due to the team being made up largely of Scots employed in the establishing of the Avoniel Distillery in Belfast.
