Biography:
A light-weight outside-left who used fleet footwork to escape the attentions of opposition defenders, Thomas McConkey was a graduate of Boys' Brigade football. After continuing his apprenticeship in the Amateur League he joined Cliftonville Olympic, gaining Junior caps against Scotland and Wales and Intermediate League honours against the Glasgow Junior League and Leinster Senior League during the 1926/27 season. By the end of that campaign he had been promoted to the Reds first eleven, making an "excellent start" to his career in the higher grades. Progress continued apace in his second season in senior circles as McConkey was rewarded with an Amateur cap against England and another two years later against Scotland.
