Robert Chambers played for Woodvale in the Alliance and Combination before joining Cliftonville Strollers. He progressed from the Strollers to Cliftonville Olympic and finally the firstteam. While at Solitude he became very popular and earned an Ireland Amateur cap against England in November 1921. The club was reportedly "sorry to lose him" when he left in 1922.
