Biography:
Larne's first amateur international player, Malachy McKinney came from a footballing family - his brothers Danny (Belfast Celtic, Hull, Bradford City, Norwich and Ireland) and Jack (Dundalk, Larne and Bangor) were both first class attacking talents.

McKinney played his football in and around his native-Belfast, appearing in the final of the Jordan Cup for Trojans. When Trojans folded he joined Bangor and from there he moved to Larne. At Larne he played on the right wing with his brother, Jack, alongside him at inside-right. Much heralded, his selection for Amateur Ireland came as no surprise.

In 1926 McKinney was one of six Northerners who featured for Fordsons (a Cork based side who where the Ford Motor Company's works team) that faced heavy favourites Shamrock Rovers in the Free State Cup Final. The match at Dalymount Park, played in front of a then Free State record crowd of 25,000, was won 3-2 by the underdogs.
