Biography:
John Young moved from Derry City to Distillery in the summer of 1968. He was quickly recognised at Amateur international level, though his only appearance proved an unhappy one as England ran out 5-0 winners at Charlton. Young's only season at Grosvenor Park brought him an appearance in the Irish Cup final. In the initial 0-0 draw with Ards at Windsor Park he pulled off some fine saves, but in the replay Ards won 4-2 after extra-time.

Young's time playing for Distillery coincided with the beginnings of the "Troubles" which were particularly prevalent in his native Derry. On occasion he had trouble getting to matches due to the unrest and famously Peter Rafferty had to fill in as goalkeeper. After just a season with the Belfast-club, Young joined the more local Finn Harps.
