Biography:
Linfield's Sam Swan was offered an international opportunity in 1899 when Ireland were denied the services of all-but-one of their "Anglos" for a match against Scotland at Parkhead. A badly weakened but "plucky" Irish defence was overwhelmed in a 9-1 defeat.

Born in west Belfast, not far from the Linfield Mill, Swan died in 1903 from influenza.
