Biography:
Belfast Athletic were founding members of the County Antrim & District FA in April 1888. In the following season they recorded a 16-0 win over United Steamship in the 1888/89 Irish Cup. 1889 was also marked for the club by William Thompson becoming the club's only ever international player.

Thompson took the field in an Ireland jersey for the only time against Scotland at Ibrox for a match held in "somewhat boisterous wather". The breeze assisted Scots were four goals ahead by half-time and, despite "several praiseworthy efforts", the Irish forwards "were easily held". The story in the second-half was much the same, with "the Irishmen [making determined] dashes into Scottish territory" but failing to find the net as the Scots finished 7-0 victors in what was reported as an "enjoyable" match.
