Biography:
A prolific goalscorer with Bohemians through the 1900s and 1910s, Johnny McDonnell managed 31 goals in 1908/09 (15 in the Irish League) and 32 in 1911/12 (14 in the League) on the way to a career total of over 150.

Capped at international, amateur and inter-league level, McDonnell's goalscoring form unfortunately didn't transfer to the highest stage. Although he played "with great dash" against Scotland, contrary to his Amateur record, he failed to score in the four matches he played in the International Championship.

Away from football, McDonnell served nearly 50 years with the Post Office, and by the time of his retirement in 1950 was Chief Inspector of Services. He was also prominently associated with Radio Eireann at its establishment. Also a keen golfer, he was a member of The Royal Dublin Golf Club.
