Biography:
Tommy Whiteside was a regular on the right-hand-side of Distillery’s attack, from his debut in January 1890 through to November 1892 when he immigrated to the USA. Although major honours eluded him, he did play in Co. Antrim Shield and Charity Cup finals.
Whiteside featured on one occasion for Ireland, scoring in a 6-1 defeat by England at Wolverhampton in March 1891. At just 18 years and 162 days, he remains one of the youngest ever goalscorers in an Irish shirt.
On his move to the USA in late-1892, Whiteside signed for the highly successful Rhode Island-based, Pawtucket Free Wanderers, who went on to claim the 1893 American Cup, but, although he played in earlier rounds, he did not feature in the final. Whiteside returned to Distillery in December 1894, featuring in another Co. Antrim Shield Final defeat before moving on to Milltown.
