Biography:
Younger brother of John, Tom McClatchey initially came into the Distillery team in his sibling’s old left-wing role during the 1891/92 season. Soon he established himself as a remarkably consistent half-back, often in the centre, but more usually the left. He was an ever-present for the Whites in 1894/95 and 1895/96 (when they claimed their first ever Irish League title). He also played in two Irish Cup Final wins, over Linfield in 1894 and Glentoran in 1896 and picked up two Co. Antrim Shield winner’s medals.
Capped once by Ireland, McClatchey stepped into the left-half role vacated by ex-club mate Jack Burnett for a match against Scotland at Parkhead in March 1895. Despite a lively first-half performance, Ireland were lucky to hold a “determined” Scottish side, who “sent in shots which went over and past the sticks, but never straight” to a 1-3 scoreline.
McClatchey, who also represented the Irish League against the Football League in November 1896, was forced to retire from playing due to a serious knee injury.
