Biography:
In 1900 Celtic (the ‘Belfast’ prefix was not officially added until the following year) claimed their first major honour, pipping Linfield to the Irish League title by a single point. Their star performer was centre-forward Pat McAuley, who top-scored with eight of their eighteen goals.
That same season McAuley was also honoured with selection for the Irish League, for a 3-1 defeat by the Football League at Burnden Park, Bolton, and Ireland, when he led the line in a 3-0 defeat by Scotland at Solitude. He was therefore the first Celtic player to win international recognition.
A member of the Celtic club since their Junior days, McAuley had played in the team that defeated Distillery 3-1 in the 1895 Co. Antrim Shield Final – a full year before they entered the Irish League.
