Biography:
A surprise last minute inclusion in the Northern Ireland squad that travelled to face Albania in June 1993 - he hadn't played a firstteam match since joining Crystal Palace a year earlier - Darren Patterson remained on the periphery of the squad until his international début a year later. A no-nonsense defender, capable in the centre or at right-back, his proudest moment in a green (and blue) jersey was the headed winner against Switzerland in 1998.
Since retiring as a player, Patterson has worked at Oxford as youth team coach, caretaker manager (November-December 2004), briefly manager in March 2006 and first team coach (April 2007) until being appointed as manager again in November 2007. He was sacked in November 2008 and in May 2009 joined Bristol Rovers as Head of Youth. In May 2010 he was promoted to assistant-manager and was caretaker manager from December 2010 to January 2011. In June 2011 he joined Rotherham as assistant-manager, serving as caretaker in March 2012.
