Very talented and highly underrated player who served Sunderland AFC well, for over a decade. A classic wing-half who converted to a central defensive role in his later years. Ideally suited to playing alongside a traditional centre-half in a 4-4-2 formation, due to his strong tackling and passing skills combined with his ability to read the game.
