Biography:
Sam Cooke was just one of nine players to have featured for two or more different Irish clubs in the "English" FA Cup. Irish clubs regularly entered the world's oldest cup tournament between 1886/87 and 1890/91.
Cooke played his first English Cup match for YMCA in October 1988, suffering a 5-0 defeat by Cliftonville at Shafesbury Park. For the following season the two teams were "amalgamated" with Cliftonville the dominant partner, so Cooke played for Cliftonville in a 4-0 defeat by Linfield in October 1889.
In October 1890 Cliftonville finally met English opponents, defeating Macclesfield 4-3 in Belfast before traveling to Leek a month later where they won 2-1. Cliftonville were drawn away to Chester for the following round but decided to scratch due to financial concerns.
Thereafter all Irish clubs decided that entering the FA Cup was no longer a worthwhile exercise.
