INTERNATIONAL TRIAL MATCH

ANGLO-IRISH v. HOME IRISH

This game was played at Distillery ground, Belfast, in dull weather. There were four thousand spectators. Play opened pretty fast and in favour of the home side, whose work was very good. Burnison and Hill had hard luck. Thompson got hurt and retired, leaving his side short for a while. Meaney, with a fine shot scored for the Anglos. Interval score:-

In the second half the Anglos rearranged their attack. Renneville, out-side right, going centre, and Murphy into the latter's position. The home lot had several chances of equalising, but were poor at close quarters. However, a penalty kick, McCrossan bringing down Thompson, and Robertson taking the kick, equalised, and Enright got a second in the last minute. McBirnie in kicking out punted the ball against McKeown. Result:-

McCrossan (Dykehead) Dykehead competed in the Scottish Football Union, which also included some league clubs' "A" sides. This is presumably how McCrossan came to the selectors' attention. No further details available.
Charles Mercer (Greenock Morton) also played for Distillery where he was part of the 1905/06 Irish League winning squad.
John Maginnes (Greenock Morton) also played for Kilbarchan.
John Meaney (Leith Athletic) also played for Falkirk, Hibs and East Stirlingshire. Born Tralee, 6th September 1886.
