Biography:
David Wells' early career showed much promise, his League debut came just days before his seventeenth birthday, he won Under-18 caps for Northern Ireland (through his locally born parents) and in the summer of 1995 he traveled with the Full squad on their end-of-season tour of Canada.
Alas, he was never to make another appearance in the Football League, and he left Bournemouth, initially on loan, for League of Wales club, Barry Town. Barry were then the dominant club in Welsh football, and they clinched the Championship, Premier Cup and League Cup during Wells' two seasons at Jenner Park. In June 1999 Wells added an Under-21 cap to his collection, but the presence of Roy Carroll and David Miskelly limited him to a single cap at that level.
In 2001 Wells arrived in the Irish League with Cliftonville, and in 2002/03 he moved on to Portadown, where he displaced the veteran Mickey Keenan early in the season. He helped the Ports to finish as League runners-up and won two Mid-Ulster Cups (one held over from the previous season) during his first year at Shamrock Park. However, the signing of David Miskelly for the 2004/05 season saw Wells drop out of the first-team reckoning.
In August 2004 Wells signed a three year deal with Newry City, but after just a handful of appearances in which he made a number of high-profile mistakes, Wells announced that he was quitting football. Later that season he signed for Intermediate First Division club Moyola Park and resisted a number of attempts by Premier League clubs to sign him.
Finally, in November 2005 Dungannon Swifts' manager Joe McAree convinced David Wells to return to the Irish League's top division, though he was restricted to reserve team appearances until the transfer window opened in January 2006. After early successes in helping the Swifts qualify for the Setanta Cup, Wells found himself displaced by the promising young Dwayne Nelson and he was released at the end of 2007/08. He returned to Cliftonville in June 2008 when he took on the role of goalkeeping coach. He currently fulfils the same role at Ballymena United.
