Biography:
Highly-rated as a young forward at Glentoran, Jack Wattie scored on his debut, in a 3-0 win over Distillery on 9 January 1897, though that proved his only appearance of that campaign. The following season he played just four times, including in a 4-0 Charity Cup Final defeat by the North Staffordshire Regiment in April 1898, before leaving the Oval in a contract dispute.

Wattie joined Distillery, making his debut on 10 September 1898 and was established on the left-side of attack in a highly successful campaign for the Whites. One of his fourteen goals came in the 2-0 Test Match win over Linfield that gave Distillery the Irish League title for a second time and he also featured in the side which finished as runners-up to Linfield in the Charity Cup.

While with Distillery, Wattie also won his only cap, joining four of his club-mates for a visit to Roker Park, Sunderland on 18 February 1899. The Whites’ quintet of Wattie, Ponsonby, Mercer, Cochrane and Waring were to face an England onslaught, which brought them a record 13-2 home win.

After making amends with the Glentoran hierarchy, Wattie was to become revered by the Oval faithful. He developed from a forward to half-back and played three times for the Irish League after his return. He played close to one hundred further games for the Glens, including in two Co. Antrim Shield wins, and two Charity Cup Finals, one of which was won 2-0 against Linfield.
