Northern Ireland Regions' Cup Play-Off Results

ENGLAND Premier League: The Premier League title was almost won by a Northern Ireland manager for the first time with Brendan Rodgers ' Liverpool finishing second. The previously dominant Manchester United  were well off the pace and there was no fourth title medal for Jonny Evans , with even Europa League qualification eluding them. Steven Davis ' Southampton  tailed off after looking strong contenders for European qualification, but they can be satisfied with a top-half finish. There has been more GAWA interest at the wrong end of the table, with all of the bottom half still looking anxiously over their shoulders until the last few weeks....

Hugh Lowry

Club Career: Bangor Ards Biography: One of the Lowry clan that also included B international  Tommy , Hugh was a prolific goalscorer from inside-left. His goals initially brought a degree of respectability to Bangor before firing Ards to the Irish League title. He scored 30 goals as the Gibson Cup arrived at Castlereagh Park for the first time. The following season he became the first Irish League player to score in European competition as Ards lost 4-1 to French giants, Rheims in the Champions' Cup. Invited to move to England by several clubs, including Liverpool, Huddersfield and Bristol City, in the days of the maximum wage it more sense for Lowry to remain a part-time player alongside a steady job. Willie Cowan

Name: William Cowan Born: Height: Weight: Position: Right-Half Representative Honours: Northern Ireland: 2 Amateur Caps (1955-1956) . Club Career: Cliftonville Biography: Willie Cowan came to the fore during Cliftonville's participation in the 1955 Isle of Man National Football Tournament, which featured the British Isles' leading amateur sides (Bohemians, Bishop Auckland, Newtown) plus the Isle of Man's national XI and a British European Airways International XI. Cowan earned praise for a series of "clever displays". It was only after the start of the 1955/56 season that he Cowan established himself in the Irish League. Though small in stature, he was an assured tackler and effective in both defence and attack. It was these qualities that earned him two Amateur caps during that season.
