Biography:
A goalscoring forward, Caolan Lavery had represented Canada at youth level, appearing in the 2009 CONCACAF Under-17 Qualification Tournament in Mexico, before electing to  play for the country of his parents' birth, Northern Ireland. He played for a number of teams in Canada before signing youth forms with Ipswich as a 16 year-old. Among his teammates at Portman Road were Rory McKeown and Josh Carson, and the trio appeared together for Northern Ireland Under-19s, including in the run to the 2011 Milk Cup final. That summer he attracted the interest of Tottenham, but an injury scuppered any potential move. He was offered a six-month professional contract by Ipswich in October 2011 but rejected it as he was unhappy with the terms and left Portman Road behind. In the following weeks he was linked with a move to Bradford and went on trial at Leicester.

After further interest from a number of other clubs, including Sunderland and Kilmarnock, Lavery joined Sheffield Wednesday's development squad in the summer of 2012. He was an unused substitute for several of the Owls' early season matches but it wasn't until a mid-season loan at Southend United that he made his senior debut, as a substitute, in a 1-0 win over Oxford. After four appearances, all from the bench, Lavery's loan spell was cut short by injury. He made his Wednesday debut early in the following season, again as a substitute, in a 2-1 home defeat by Burnley. He remained a match-day regular at Hillsborough while continuing to find the net for the reserves until loaned out to Plymouth Argyle in an effort to give him more intense firstteam experience. He netted his first senior goal in a 2-1 win for Argyle over Bury on 21 December 2013 and by the time he returned to Hillsborough he had scored three times in eight games.

Back at Wednesday in January 2014, Lavery came off the bench late on to score twice, his first goals for the club, in a 6-0 win over Leeds. He scored another brace in a 4-1 win over Birmingham in March. He was considered for Northern Ireland's summer tour to South America but was unable to attend due to a family wedding. Hopes of continuing his good form unto the 2014/15 season were scuppered as he suffered a cruciate injury in pre-season. After a brief mid-season loan spell with Chesterfield, Lavery re-established himself in the Owls' first team and earned a first official call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for the end-of-season games against Qatar and Romania. He remained an unused sub for both matches.

Lavery struggled to re-establish himself in the Wednesday team early in the 2015/16 season and he joined Portsmouth on a three-month loan deal. On his return to Hillsborough he was unable to agree a new deal and as his contract ran out he was free to talk to other clubs. After being linked with a permanent move to Portsmouth he eventually joined Wednesday's rivals, Sheffield United for an undisclosed compensation fee.

Biography:
A skilful, rangy midfielder, Blackburn-born Adam Barton qualified for Northern Ireland through the parent rule.

Formerly a youth team player with Blackburn Rovers, Barton was released at 16 due to a serious back injury. Preston North End then took a chance and offered him a scholarship then a professional deal, on a two-and-a-half year contract, just prior to his eighteenth birthday. He was first included in Preston's senior squad in March 2009 when he was an unused substitute against Charlton. It was while on loan with Crawley that Barton made his firstteam debut, coming on as a substitute against Luton Town in a 3-0 Blue Square Premier defeat on 1st September 2009. He made his Preston debut, starting against Scunthorpe, on 10th April 2010 but was substituted at half-time following a head injury. Since the start of the 2010/11 season Barton has been a regular at Deepdale and he scored his first goal in a 4-3 defeat by local rivals Burnley on 11th Sptember 2010. Impressive early season form has already seen him linked to a number of Premier League sides.

Barton, who has previously been included in Northern Ireland Under-19 and Under-21 squads, earned his first senior call-up for the double header against Italy and the Faroe Islands in September 2010. A day later he withdrew from the squad hoping to keep his international options open. Two months later he was again called-up by Nigel Worthington as a late inclusion in the squad for a match against Morocco. As this was a friendly, his appearance had not permanently tied his future to Northern Ireland.

In March 2011, despite struggling for form and having been dropped from the Preston firstteam, Barton was called into the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad, making a further mockery of his earlier claims that he wished to retain the option of playing for England.

Barton joined Coventry for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2012. He was released when his contract expired in 2015 and joined Portsmouth.

Biography:
Young striker who's progress at Aston Villa was slowed by serious injury. Described by Steve Beaglehole as "technically good and adaptable" big things had been expected of him prior to undergoing knee reconstruction surgery and he had been training with the Villa firstteam before his seventeen month enforced absence. By early 2010 he had given up hopes of ever making it as a professional and had taken the decision to retire.

Encouraged by his family to give it another go, McGurk joined Hednesford Town where he played under former Northern Ireland midfielder, Bernard McNally. He then signed for Tranmere Rovers, initially on a non-contract basis and established himself over the next few seasons.

After starring at youth level for Northern Ireland, McGurk's only appearance for the Under-21 team lasted just 38 minutes as he struggled to make an impact as he was in the middle of an abortive return from a succession of serious and niggling injuries which included shin splints and as well as torn knee ligaments.

Good form in the 2012/13 season saw a first senior call-up for the February friendly against Malta. His contract with Tranmere expired in the summer of 2013 and he was targeted by several higher-tier clubs but eventually signed with League Two side Burton Albion. In 2015 he joined Portsmouth on a two year deal. He remained at Fratton Park for just a year before joining Cambridge United. He spent 2017/18 with Morecambe and his five goals helped them to avoid relegation from the EFL but he was released as the campaign ended.

Biography:
Daryl Fordyce established himself as an 18 year-old in Portsmouth's reserve team, his attacking midfield play earning comparisons with Trevor Brooking. He was sent on loan to Bournemouth in February 2006 to earn some senior experience and made his debut in a home game against Oldham.

A star for Northern Ireland at underage level, an early highlight was his four goal haul in a 4-1 European Under-19 Championship qualifier against Serbia & Montenegro in May 2006. Thereafter he was a regular in the Under-21 squad, scoring on his debut to give Northern Ireland an early lead in Germany before the home side came back to win 2-1.

Unable to progress to the Portsmouth firstteam, Fordyce was released in 2007 and signed for Glentoran. He was initially used in an unfavoured right-wing role by the Glens and was then over-shadowed by the signing of Keith Gillespie. Transfer-listed in a cost-cutting move during the summer of 2010, he opened the 2010/11 season with five goals in a 6-1 win over Lisburn Distillery and earned the Carling Player of the Month award for August as he was at last deployed in a central attacking role.

Fordyce made a shock move across Belfast in the summer of 2011 to join Linfield. In his first season with the Blues he claimed Irish League and Cup winner's medals. Mid-way through the 2012/13 season it was announced that he would be moving to Canada. He signed for FC Edmonton where he was joined by ex-Linfield teammates, Albert Watson and Robbie Garrett. Aside from a brief spell with Cincinnati, Fordyce remained with Edmonton until they folded in November 2017, at which point he was the franchise's record goalscorer.

Biography:
‘Jimmy Mac’ McAlinden was marked for stardom from an early age. A Schoolboy international, he was actually playing for Glentoran IIs when spotted by officials of Belfast Celtic, the club he had supported his whole life. In actual fact, McAlinden had grown up in the shadows of Paradise and jumped at the £2 weekly wage offered to him as a sixteen year-old. He quickly developed into one of the most effective players in the Irish League, playing in a deep-lying inside-right role.

Elisha Scott’s Celtic side were the dominant force in Irish League football in the years that preceded the War. McAlinden won a host of medals and although he missed out on the 1937 Irish Cup Final due to injury he made up for it the following year with the opening goal in a 2-0 Final replay win over Bangor. He also won representative honours, making his debut for the Irish League in a 3-2 defeat by the Scottish League in September 1937, and added a second Inter-League cap a month later in a 3-0 defeat by the Football League. In November he won the first of two caps collected while with Belfast Celtic in a 1-1 draw with Scotland.

McAlinden dedicated his life to football, training full-time throughout his time with Belfast Celtic, and it was little surprise that he was linked to a move across the water. Overtures were received from Huddersfield and Tottenham, but it was Portsmouth that stepped in with a record-breaking £7,500 bid in December 1938. Within six months of his arrival at Fratton Park McAlinden had an FA Cup winner’s medal courtesy of a surprise 4-1 Final win over Wolves.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 Portsmouth suspended the contracts of all of their players and McAlinden returned to Belfast and Celtic Park. He added two further Irish Cup medals to his collection in 1941 and 1944 (both thanks to wins over Linfield) as well as ‘War-Time’ League and ‘War-Time’ Gold Cup winner’s medals. He also spent a season with Shamrock Rovers prior to returning to Portsmouth, finishing as a runner-up in the FAI Cup Final at the hands of Drumcondra.

In June 1946 McAlinden, during a tour of Spain and Portugal, he was among the few Northern-born players to play for Eire. Come the resumption of the Home Nations Championship that September he won his third cap for Northern Ireland in a heavy defeat by England. Stoke City manager Bob McGrory saw McAlinden as the answer to the Potters’ troublesome inside-forward position, and forked out a club-record £8,000 for his signature in September 1947. He never settled at the Victoria Ground, and after a little over a year of inconsistent performances he was transferred to Division Three (South) Southend United.

Despite joining the Shrimpers when in the twilight of his career, McAlinden is still regarded as perhaps the club’s finest ever player. He was club-captain and penalty expert, his range of passing was beyond anything seen before or since at the club and he rejected a number of offers from other ‘larger’ clubs – “I would never move sideways” he claimed. In 1948 he won his fourth and final Northern Ireland cap, the first awarded to a post-War Southend player, in a 6-2 defeat by England.

By the early 1950s, in the veteran stage of his playing career, McAlinden began to look to the future. He took coaching courses at Loughborough College and in April 1954 he accepted the position of player-manager at Glenavon. In a memorable send-off from Southend, manager Harry Warren led the crowd in three cheers and loud applause as McAlinden left the field for the last time.

In over a decade in charge at Mourneview McAlinden oversaw a period of unprecedented Glenavon success. The ‘Double’ was won in 1956/57 and was added to by another League title in 1960 and two more Irish Cups in 1959 and 1961. Two Gold Cups, three Ulster Cups and three City Cups were also claimed prior to his surprise resignation in 1965. Through the mid and late 1960s McAlinden scouted Irish talent for Coventry City and Liverpool.

In February 1969 McAlinden made his management comeback with Distillery. Early inspiration brought the Whites to two Irish Cup Finals, where they lost to Ards in 1969 and defeated Derry City in 1972, before the ‘troubles’ placed the club in severe turmoil. With Distillery homeless and struggling for consistency McAlinden left in the summer of 1975. He was out of football for less than a year, taking charge of Drogheda United in early-1976. He once again proved inspirational at a small club with the Drogs reaching the 1976 FAI Cup Final, only to lose to Bohemians. They followed that up with semi-final appearances in 1977 and 1978 and third place finishes in the League in 1977, 1978 and 1979.

After retiring from football management in 1979 McAlinden concentrated on his golf, the game that had helped keep him calm throughout his career. He could look back on a long and successful time in football and the achievements of some of the talent he had helped to develop including the likes of Wilbur Cush, Sammy Wilson and Martin O’Neill.

Biography:
A sublime dribbler and a master of ball control, Bobby Irvine was amongst the most gifted attacking players of his generation. Signed by Everton for £500 in September 1921, he made his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in November 1921 at Anfield. He quickly became a crowd favourite at Goodison, his bravery and determination coupled with his thrilling skills entertained the fans for six seasons. More of a creator than a scorer, Irvine normally played at inside-right, but when deployed at centre-forward he proved an effective goal-getter, best illustrated by a hat-trick against Aston Villa in January 1922.

First selected for Ireland in March 1922, Irvine played at centre-forward in a 2-1 defeat by Scotland, indeed five of his first six caps were won leading the attack. An early personal best performance came with two goals in a 3-0 win over Wales in Wrexham, but he will be best remembered for his role in 2-1 and 2-0 defeats of England at Windsor Park in 1923 and 1927, and for his goal that gave Ireland a 3-2 lead at Anfield in 1926, only for the game to finish 3-3.

Troubled by injuries through a number of spells of his career, Irvine left Everton in March 1928 having made just nine appearances in what was a title winning campaign for the Toffees. Snapped up by Portsmouth, he made his Fratton Park debut in a 1-0 win over Manchester United on 17th March. He helped his new-club to the FA Cup Final in 1929, but injury robbed him of a place in the final line-up as they lost 2-0 to Bolton. In August 1929 Irvine joined Welsh club, Connah’s Quay, where he became the only player from that club to be capped for Ireland.

With Connah’s Quay suffering severe financial difficulties, Irvine returned to Ireland, signing for Derry City. He marked his Brandywell debut with a goal in a 1-0 Gold Cup quarter-final win over Larne on 3rd September 1931. With Derry, Irvine took his caps total to 15, and in October 1932 he also played twice for the Irish League, in 5-2 and 4-1 defeats by the English and Scottish Leagues respectively.

Irvine returned to the England in May 1933 with Division Three (South) club, Watford. He played his last Football League match in spring 1934. In November 1934 he was one of five Waterford players reportedly suspended "sine die" after refusing to return on the bus following a match in Sligo. Other later clubs were Brideville (February 1936) and Leicester Post Office Engineers (November 1936). With his playing days on the wane, it was written of him: “There is no man who takes harder knocks and squeal less than Irvine.”
