Biography:
Kevin O'Flanagan was a multi-talented sportsman. He was capped at international level in football and rugby, was a Gaelic footballer for Dublin Minors, an Irish champion at athletics, a scratch golfer and an accomplished tennis player. His younger brother, Mick, was also a dual-code international having represented southern Ireland at football and Ireland at rugby.

O'Flanagan, already an Éire Junior international, made his international bow at the age of just eighteen as the FAI's Ireland side drew 3-3 against Norway in a must-win World Cup qualifier. A win would have sealed qualification for the 1938 World Cup Finals in France, though the youngster made do with a goal (according to some sources the team's 50th) having had another ruled out for off-side in the opening minutes. He remained a regular for the FAI team until after the War.

As a teenager O'Flanagan had combined his association and Gaelic football codes with some success, that is until is daliances with the "foreign game" were discovered and the GAA issued him with the mandatory life-ban. It wasn't until he was studying medicine at University College, Dublin that he first tried his hand at rugby and he proved a natural, first earning selection for Leinster in 1940 and for an Ireland XV that faced the Army at Ravenhill two years later. In parallel with his successes in team sports he was a four-time Irish long-jump champion and Irish sprint champion at 60 and 100 metres.

O'Flanagan rose to captain the all-amateur Bohemians club and in 1945 his goalscoring, and that of brother Mick, fired the club to an FAI Cup Final appearance against Shamrock Rovers and a Intercity Cup Final win over Belfast Celtic. O'Flanagan did blot his copy book against Celtic as he was sent-off.

In 1945, after completing his studies, O'Flanagan took a medical post in Middlesex. He signed amateur forms with Arsenal, turning down a professional deal so that he could continue playing rugby. He scored on his Gunners debut in a 6-2 Football League South defeat by Charlton in October 1945 and finished the last War-Time season as the club's topscorer with eleven goals, mainly from the wing. He was also honoured by the IFA for the first time with selection for the Victory Internationals against Scotland and Wales.

Nicknamed "The Flying Doctor", with the oval ball O'Flanagan was turning out with London Irish and played for an Ireland XV against France on 26 January 1946 in an unofficial international. Two weeks later he missed out on an appearance against England at Lansdowne Road in the Five Nations as he was fog-bound in London.

O'Flanagan made his Football League-proper debut against Blackburn in a 3-1 defeat in September 1946 but played just fourteen times in that first post-War season due to work and, to a lesser extent, rugby commitments. In December 1947 he lined out for Ireland in a test match against a touring Australia side for his only full rugby cap.

Although he remained on the books at Highbury until 1949, O'Flanagan made no further appearances for Arsenal. He did play non-league football with Corinthian Casuals and Barnet, earning a first Amateur Ireland cap as centre-forward against England in February 1949. During the 1949/50 season he played with Brentford, and won a second Amateur cap, scoring a second half consolation from outside-right, before his playing career was ended by an ankle injury.

In 1948 O'Flanagan, who would have likely appeared at the Olympics of 1940 and 1944 had they not been cancelled due to the Second World War, was appointed to the British Olympic Medical Committee and so began a five decade association with the Olympic movement. With his own sporting days behind him, O'Flanagan became an acknowledge sports injury expert, worked with the Irish Olympic team and in 1976 was appointed to the International Olympic Committee.

Biography:
A regular captain for Northern Ireland at every Youth level up to Under-20, Michael O'Connor became involved in a tug-of-war between the IFA and the FAI and he actually turned out for the Republic of Ireland's Under-21 side. Because those appearances were not competitive he was able to change his mind and in November 2007 was included in Roy Millar's Under-21 panel for matches against Luxembourg and Moldova. In March 2008 Nigel Worthington then included O'Connor in the Full squad for a friendly match against Georgia.

A product of the highly successful Crewe Alexandra Academy, O'Connor helped Alex's youth side to the 2004 FA Youth Cup semi-final. Originally a more attacking player, he has developed into an effective defensive midfielder using his size to great effect. His League debut came is a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Brighton in February 2006 and he was a regular feature in the Crewe line-up from the 2006/07 season on.

On 6th March 2009, O'Connor joined Lincoln City on loan after falling out with Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson. He was made available for transfer at the end of the campaign and after being linked with a permanent move to Lincoln and training with Hibernian he signed for Scunthorpe in a deal reported to be worth £250,000. With The Iron he teamed up with Northern Ireland teammate, Grant McCann.

Although impressing in the Championship on a regular basis, O'Connor has struggled to impress his international boss, Nigel Worthington. As such he has been only an occasional squad member, but despite news of his frustrations appearing in the press he has not been completely ignored.

Biography:
An intelligent and stylish centre-half, Paddy O'Connell was a powerful opponent. While playing for Stranville Rovers and working at Boland’s Mills in Dublin he was signed by Belfast Celtic in August 1908, and played the full season with them, scoring 5 goals in the league and 4 in the City Cup. The highlight of his career at Belfast Celtic was scoring a hattrick in the 4-1 defeat of Linfield at Windsor Park in a City Cup match on the 31st October 1908.

In April 1909 O'Connell signed for Sheffield Wednesday and spent three seasons at the club without ever securing a regular place. He became a regular at Hull for two seasons and played in all three matches for Ireland when they won the International Championship for the first time in 1914. His displays in these matches was described as “steady as a rock”. In the final match, against Scotland, Paddy was injured in the first half but resumed after eight minutes with a bandaged left forearm. His re-emergence was key as Ireland also lost goalkeeper Fred McKee to injury and they battled from behind to claim a crucial 1-1 darw.

Manchester United signed O'Connell for £1,000 in May 1914 and appointed him captain. On Good Friday 1915 he missed a penalty in a match against Liverpool that was later revealed to be fixed, though he was not among the players banned. He played for Rochdale, Clapton Orient and Chesterfield during the war years, moving to Dumbarton in Scotland in August 1919 and subsequently to Ashington until he suddenly disappeared in June 1922, leaving a wife and young family behind him. He subsequently turned up in Spain, where he embarked on a coaching career that saw him in charge of several Spanish Clubs. He also coached the Spanish national side on a number of occasions.

O'Connell was an enigmatic figure, possessed of great personal charm and charisma. In 1915 he was implicated in a betting scandal while playing for Manchester United, when he missed a penalty in a Good Friday match that was arranged to finish 2-0 to United. He reputedly escaped a suspension because he charmed the adjudication panel. When he left his wife and family in 1922, the first they knew of his whereabouts was when he sent money home from Spain. While in Spain he was associated with the republican movement, as was the Barcelona club, and O'Connell reputedly escaped execution only because General Franco was a soccer fanatic.

In his later years O'Connell moved between Spain and a brother’s home in London. He was living in London when he died on 27 February 1959. On 6th June 2015 a plaque in his honour was unveiled at his former home in the Drumcondra area of Dublin.
