Biography:
A regular captain for Northern Ireland at every Youth level up to Under-20, Michael O'Connor became involved in a tug-of-war between the IFA and the FAI and he actually turned out for the Republic of Ireland's Under-21 side. Because those appearances were not competitive he was able to change his mind and in November 2007 was included in Roy Millar's Under-21 panel for matches against Luxembourg and Moldova. In March 2008 Nigel Worthington then included O'Connor in the Full squad for a friendly match against Georgia.

A product of the highly successful Crewe Alexandra Academy, O'Connor helped Alex's youth side to the 2004 FA Youth Cup semi-final. Originally a more attacking player, he has developed into an effective defensive midfielder using his size to great effect. His League debut came is a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Brighton in February 2006 and he was a regular feature in the Crewe line-up from the 2006/07 season on.

On 6th March 2009, O'Connor joined Lincoln City on loan after falling out with Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson. He was made available for transfer at the end of the campaign and after being linked with a permanent move to Lincoln and training with Hibernian he signed for Scunthorpe in a deal reported to be worth £250,000. With The Iron he teamed up with Northern Ireland teammate, Grant McCann.

Although impressing in the Championship on a regular basis, O'Connor has struggled to impress his international boss, Nigel Worthington. As such he has been only an occasional squad member, but despite news of his frustrations appearing in the press he has not been completely ignored.

Biography:
Paddy McCourt, the "Derry Pele", emerged as an incredibly exciting talent with Rochdale. He was just seventeen when he made his debut in a 2-0 win over Torquay in October 2001. The following February he made his Northern Ireland Under-21 debut in a 1-0 defeat by Germany at Windsor Park. Such was his early form that Manchester City reportedly had a £1.5 million bid rej-ected.

Just two months after his first Under-21 appearance, McCourt made his Full debut against Spain. The friendly game, organised to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of that “night in Valencia” proved a disaster. The Northern Ireland squad had been decimated by withdrawals and Sammy McIlroy’s hand had been forced into calling up a number of Under-21 players, including the Rochdale duo of Lee McEvilly and McCourt. By the time of their emergence from the bench as second-half substitutes the match was already lost and the 5-0 final score seemed almost inevitable.

From there on McCourt continued to prove himself as an exciting prospect, but one beset by inconsistencies and ill-discipline. Mid-way through the 2004/05 season he was made available by Rochdale, and after a trial at Motherwell signed for Shamrock Rovers in January 2005. The following July he moved on to his hometown club, Derry City. With the Candystripes McCourt proved himself as one of the best footballers in Ireland with spectacular goals a regular feature of his game.

McCourt was expected to complete a move to English Premier League new-boys West Brom in June 2008 for a fee reported to be between £90,000 and £150,000. However, although Norwich City also showed an interest it was his boyhood idols Celtic that stepped in to clinch a last-minute deal for a fee believed to be close to £200,000. In February 2009 he returned to the Northern Ireland squad after a near seven year absence. He won his second cap as a substitute against San Marino.

Fitness worries and managerial instability saw McCourt make only sporadic appearances at Celtic, even still he was a real favourite and his goal against Falkirk was named SPL Goal of the Season 2009/10. A bright start to the 2010/11 season saw McCourt recalled to the Northern Ireland squad and his performance in the centre of midfield in a friendly against Morocco earned a great deal of praise, showing not only his customary skills on the ball, but also a previously unrecognised steel to his game. On a rainy-Windsor night in August 2011 he scored two goals that George Best would have been proud of against a stubborn Faroe Islands.

A resurgent Celtic won the Scottish Cup in 2011 and the SPL in 2012 with McCourt only a peripheral member of the squad. He was again merely a squad player as they claimed the Double in 2013. His appearance from the bench in the Scottish Cup final win over Hibernian, during which he wore the captain's armband, was to be his last for the Hoops as his contract expired that summer.

After trial spells with Hibs and Peterborough, McCourt signed with Barnsley early in the 2013/14 season. He showed glimpses of his talent with a wonder goal against Middlesbrough, but as the team struggled so did McCourt. He was released after relegation from the Championship was confirmed. He remained in the Championship however, signing for Brighton in the opening weeks of the following season.

Over the following few seasons McCourt remained on the periphery of the Northern Ireland squad as they qualified for Euro 2016. He had spells with Notts County and Luton but he secured a return to Northern Ireland at the end of the 2015/16 season, rejecting any chance of traveling to the Euro finals as his wife had fallen seriously ill. With his wife on the road to recovery he agreed to sign for Glenavon, however he struggled to adapt to part-time football and departed before Christmas.

After leaving Glenavon McCourt was unveiled as an Irish FA County Coach. In January he was reported to be signing for Dundalk but the move never materialised and he instead joined Finn Harps.

Biography:
A product of the West Ham youth set-up that gave England the likes of Carrick, Cole and Defoe; Grant McCann had few opportunities at Upton Park. He spent time on loan at a number of clubs before making an impact with Cheltenham during the 2000/01 season. Although his time at Whaddon Road began with him in his favoured left-midfield role, McCann was used for much of the campaign as an emergency left-back – a position he would go on to fulfil on a number of occasions for Northern Ireland.

A regular for Northern Ireland’s Under-21 side for nearly two years, McCann’s impressive left-foot brought him three goals and an early promotion to the Full international set-up. A regular in the Northern Ireland squad throughout the second half of Sammy McIlroy’s managerial reign, he normally found himself on the bench or on the left of defence, McCann seemingly dropped from the reckoning under Lawrie Sanchez. He was given a chance again with his first start in three years in a friendly against Finland in August 2006 and scored his first international goal, surprisingly with his head, against Liechtenstein in March 2007.

At club level McCann made a permanent move to Cheltenham in January 2003 for £50,000. He helped the Robins to promotion from League Two via the play-offs in 2006. The following November he joined Championship Barnsley, initially on loan, making a £100,000 permanent move when the transfer window opened in January. A year later he moved on to Scunthorpe for a six-figure undisclosed fee. In April 2009 he played for Scunthorpe in the Johnston Paint Trophy Final at Wembley. He scored a spectacular equaliser, a curler into the top corner from the edge of the box, in the closing minutes of normal time only for Luton to claim the trophy 3-2 in extra-time. Consolation arrived the following month by way of promotion to the Championship following a Wembley play-off final win over Millwall.

McCann's nine Championship goals in 2009/10 did much to save Scunthorpe from an instant return to League One. However, with his Iron contract expired, and despite interest from several other Championship sides, McCann chose to sign a three-year deal with Peterborough who had just been relegated to League One. His goals again proved key, none more-so than a free-kick in the 3-0 play-off final win over Huddersfield at Old Trafford, as The Posh achieved an instant promotion.

Following Peterborough's relegation back to League One in 2013, McCann was appointed player-coach. That August he announced that he would be taking a break from international football in order to concentrate on his dual role at club level. He also stated that he would never let Northern Ireland down if called upon to play.

In 2014 he was part of the Peterborough side that defeated 3-1 Chesterfield in the League Trophy final, putting in the corner from which Josh McQuoid scored the opener. The following season he found his playing opportunities with The Posh limited, and while he was still fulfilling his player-coach role, he felt that he would like to extend his on-field days. In January he agreed his release, and joined Linfield, the club he followed as a boy. He stayed at Windsor Park for just six weeks before returning to Peterborough as a coach. He was promoted to assistant manager for the 2015/16 season and officially announced his retirement as a player. In September 2015 he briefly acted as caretaker manager and he was permanently appointed to the managerial post in May 2016. He was sacked in February 2018 after a run of poor results.
